What is Kidelity?
Kidelity is a web application that works like an on-line bank and money management account for kids and their parents. Kids log into their own, independent accounts which are linked in the background to parental control accounts. Kids track their chores, earn allowance, and manage their savings, spending, and charitable accounts. They can communicate with their parents, set targets for saving, and view their earnings history. From a separate control account, parents set rules and guidelines in the background. Parents set chores, allowance levels, distribution percentages, and rules for tracking. Parents can observe their children's activities online, track history and performance, provide different incentives, and manage administrative settings. Within a few weeks of using Kidelity, the benefits become clear: the rules are defined, the link between work and reward is firmly established, kids quickly become accountable, and it is very easy for parents to be consistent in establishing expectations and rewarding behavior.
Why does it work for families?
Just like adults, children benefit from financial discipline. Kidelity provides a consistent, easy way for parents to provide that discipline, and kids respond for the same reason. When the rules are understood, and the reward is consistently applied in a way that kids can rely on, behavior changes. Kids become 'money aware' very quickly because they are learning the fundamentals of managing money with their own money. Text books and lectures cannot accomplish what real experience can. And the best way for a child to get that is in the home. Try it... it works.
What age range is Kidelity recommended for?
In general, ages 6 through high school. As soon as they start taking an interest in money, you should begin taking an interest in teaching them the right way to think about it. It is also a great tool for familiarizing kids with computer based applications.
What is a Family ID?
A family shares an ID primarily so that everyone can have any individual username they want. There are a lot of boys named 'Mike', and we didn't think it would be fair if only the first Mike got to use his own name as his username. With a Family ID, all Mikes get to be Mike and the whole family gets to use the same Family ID.
Is my information safe?
Absolutely. Your family's privacy is of utmost importance. No information linked directly to you or your child is used for any purpose other than your own personal use within the application. Aggregated data across the entire user base may be used to provide you with statistical information and insights into what other families are doing across the country, but none of that information is linked to a specific user and no personal information is ever disclosed.
Is advice for parents provided?
Our primary objective is to help you teach your children. Advice, answers to frequently asked questions, recommendations, and benchmark data is used extensively throughout the site to assist parents in understanding not only how to use the application, but in thinking through the right principles of money management to use for your family.
Does it use actual bank deposits?
No. From the kid's perspective, it works just like an online bank, but all cash transactions are managed through the parent. Money goes into kid's accounts automatically when weekly allowances are paid. Cash gets deposited and withdrawn through the "Parent ATM".
How do I get started?
To get started, click on 'Create an account' from the login page, and you will be guided through the process. Some basic information will be collected up front, then once you are in the application detailed instructions will be provided to help you take advantage of all the features the application has to offer.
What if I lose my password or login ID?
From the login screen you can select "Forgot password or user ID?". A new password can be set and emailed to your email address on associated with your account. Once you receive your new password, it is recommended you go back into settings and change it to something you can easily remember.
How did Kidelity get started?
Kidelity was designed by a Dad looking for a better way to consistently manage an allowance program for his kids. It began as an off-line project using paper and boxes, then moved on-line in a prototype in 2006. After a couple of years of using it with our own family, and after many requests from friends to make it available to others, the version you see here was born. We hope it works as well for your family as it has for ours... and we would love your feedback which we make it easy for you to provide when you are logged in. Thanks for giving it a try
What if I have a question?
From within the application after you've logged in, you can click on 'Make a suggestion' and easily ask any question you want. Outside the application you can send us an email at comments@kidelity.com and we'll do our best to get back to you as quickly as we can. Our users are the ones that define our priorities for product development, so we really appreciate your feedback.
